Bullish and Bearish

This is a new section I am starting which will put the three most underrated and overrated starts of the week. Bullish will be the players who have underperformed so far and offer great value as a start this week. Bearish will be the players who have played well recently and may come back down to earth.

Week 4
Bullish
WR Chad Johnson
Chad is playing the NE Patiots in a statement game for the Bengals. CJ's stats have been horrible so far this year as double coverage has stymied him and allowed Carson to spot Chris Henry and TJ Housh open downfield. Now, as defenses realize they will be burned if they roll too much coverage toward Chad he should have more opportunities. Plus, Chad will make sure the Bengals don't have a let down after the big win at Pitt. Last time he played the Pats he had 5 catchaes for 80 yards and a score.
QB Marc Bulger
So far this year the Rams offense has been anything but the greatest show on turf. The Lions defense should provide Marc with ample opportunities. The Lions made over the hill Favre look like the Favre from 2000. Expect Marc to be around 275 yards and three scores.

RB Ronnie Brown
Ronnie hasn't been too bad so far because the Dolphins have not had a passing game. Look for Ronnie to break loose vs the Texans D. Did you see what they allowed Clinton Portis to do? Because the Dolphins will not throw 22 completions in a row, watch them focus on the running game and Brown should have nice numbers.

Bearish
QB Chad Pennington
Chad has proven his arm is back. He is completing 66% of his passes and has five TD vs one int on the season. The Jets running game has been horrible so far this year and will continue to be vs. the Colts. The Jets should get blown out by Peyton and co. and Chad may have good yardage totals because he will be so far behind, but I think he will have 3-4 ints against the Colts D as he tries to force throws downfield to Coles and Cotchery.

WR Marques Colston
The prime example of unknown to hot commodity. Colston has become Drew Brees' top target. Facing the Carolina D, the Panthers now they are two games behind the 3-0 Saints and cannot afford to fall three games behind. They shold beat up on the Saints and take away Colston from Brees.
RB Reggie Bush
Although Reggie hasn't been in the endzone his yardage numbers have been solid in his first three games. He is definitely as good as advertised. As with Colston, I think Carolina will key on keeping Reggie inside the tackles and he will be eaten up by the Carolina D line. Expect Brees to have to try and throw downfield to keep New Orleans in the game, which would reduce Reggie's touches.

Lets see how my first edition of Bullish and Bearish works.

My Fantasy Football week 4 Matchup

I made my first change of the season this week. Because I have two losses, I was able to move up the waiver board to near the top. I was not able to pick up Maurice Morris and didn't think I would. However, I was able to snag Marques Colston of New Orleans and dropped the underachieving Michael Clayton. With a rookie QB starting for Tampa Bay I figured Clayton's numbers would go down from where they were(which was almost zero anyway). Colston has been one of the biggest surprises of the season and will move right into my starting lineup. This week here is my matchup.
I am predicted to win for the first time this year!

QB Michael Vick vs Daunte Culpepper
RB Jamal Lewis vs Fred Taylor
RB Laurence Maroney vs Reggie Bush
Flex Marques Colston vs Deuce McAllister
WR Anquan Boldin vs Keyshawn Johnson
WR Laveraneus Coles vs Lee Evans
TE Jeremy Shockey vs Tony Gonzalez
K David Akers vs Jason Elam
Def St. Louis D vs Seattle D

This team I am playing is also 1-2 for the year
There are a number of developments this week. After the alleged Terrell Owens suicide attempt, T.O. was practicing Wednesday and may play this Sunday against the Titans. Shaun Alexander is definitely out despite his proclamation that he was healed due to the power of prayer. The Cardinals reversed course and said that Kurt Warner will definitely start. That is good news for me because I now expect Boldin to have a good game.

Monday Night Meltdown in Fantasy Football

As I recap Monday Night football's primetime game, I am filled with mixed emotions. It was great to see the city of New Orleans get a break from the constant rebuilding effort. For about four hours, the city got to leave their temporary housing and witness an emotionally charged performance by the New Orleans Saints. Stuffing the vaunted Atlanta running attack and riding an emotional high from a blocked punt touchdown and a double reverse touchdown, the Saints beat the Falcons 23-3. Marques Colston, the third to last pick in the NFL draft out of Hofstra continued his amazing start to the season with 97 yards receiving. He has definitely supplanted Joe Horn in New Orleans and is Drew Brees' favorite target downfield. Reggie Bush had another solid outing(72 total yards on 17 touches) and Deuce McAllister ran hard for 81 yards. "From the moment I signed with the Saints, I was looking forward to this," said quarterback Drew Brees, who joined New Orleans during the offseason. "We couldn't have asked for it to go any better. It was a great night. It's something we'll never forget."

I needed Mike Vick to have a dynamite game light Brett Favre last week. Things started out well as Vick threw a 48 yard bomb to Ashle Lelie and Alge Crumpler dropped a sure TD in the end zone. That was as good as it got. Vick threw for 137 and rushed for 57 yards with no tds. This is the kind of inconsistancy I was hoping Vick put behind him. He still put up 13 points for me but I needed much more. I am now 1-2 in the league, but some interesting happenings occurred in week 3...

First Chris Simms had emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen and is out indefinitely. Then TE Vernon Davis broke his leg and RB Frank Gore strained his abdomin(after fumbling on the one yard line). Next Shaun Alexander broke a bone in his foot and is out 3-6 weeks depending on who you speak with. Next Arizona coach Denny Green benched fumbling, bumbling, stumbling quarterback Kurt Warner in favor of Matt Leinart. These injuries and coaches decisions are going to have a huge impact on fantasy football over the coming weeks. For those of you with Vernon Davis, look to pick up TE Eric Johnson. He was a stud TE two years ago before injuries derailed his 2005 season. If you have Shaun Alexander, Maurice Morris is his backup and performed well spelling Alexander in the past. Look for Seattle to turn toward Matt Hasselbeck and his receiving core to carry the load against the aggressive Chicago defense in week 4. If you own Kurt Warner, you may be tempted to pick up Leinart. I would first look to see if other QBs are available, like Losman, Pennington, Kitna, Roethlisberger, McNair before banking on a rookie QB. This will also affect Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald, whose receiving numbers could drop and Edgerrin James, whose numbers could rise.

Fantasy Football Week 3 Recap

As I sat yesterday watching the afternoon games and enjoying a few adult beverages I remarked at the number of close games in week 3. With barely any close games it was nice to see some quality games this week. Arguably most impressive was the Bears' Rex Grossman maturing. After throwing what could have been a game ending INT for a touchdown, he came back and threw the game winner to give the Bears a much needed win vs. rival Minnesota.

My game did not go to well this week. I thought I had some favorable match ups but they did not materialize. I am down by 39 points and have Mike Vick playing tonight. I have hope, although a slim one. I figured out if Vick passes for 150 yards, throws a TD, no interceptions, rushes for 125 yards and 2 scores I will win by a point. Based on Vick's play this season this could be possible.
My opponent, in a great move inserted Ledell Betts into his lineup even with Portis playing. Obviously, hoping for a blowout, he got his wishes. Betts, along with Eli Manning's 4th quarter numbers and Willis McGahee's career high 150 yards rushing seem to have done me in. Although so could have Jamal Lewis' effort vs. the Browns and the continued disappointment of Michael Clayton. It may be time to cut ties with the WR, especially with Tampa going on bye week and losing his starting QB.

Top Player Rankings for week 3

Friday is the key day.
As injury reports get more accurate I must monitor my team heading into the weekend. These are the top player rankings for week 3 as referenced by fftoday.com
Laveraneus Coles sat out 11 on 11 drills but was not limping in practice. This could be a big issue for me. For the injury reports check out the link on my sidebar for a full report.

Good thing Jamal Lewis is going up against the horrible Browns defense that he typically torches. I hope Jamal gets on track.

Thursday Report.

I proposed a trade yesterday of Laveraneus Coles for Chester Taylor. I thought I might be able to trade Coles while he is high on rank lists. The trade was declined. My thought was to try to pick up a quality RB for maybe a overrated receiver. Too bad.

In addition, Coles showed up as questionable for this week on the injury report, so is Jamal Lewis. These are two situations to monitor. Also, Jeremy Shockey is probable. I think all three should be fine.

My matchup is pretty even this week. I am playing against...
Eli Manning QB
Rudi Johnson RB
Willis McGahee RB
Hines Ward WR
Reggie Williams WR
Reggie Brown WR
Todd Heap TE
Jeff Reed K
Steelers Def
He is pretty strong everywhere but WR. They are especially weak.

Looking Ahead to week 3

After my two point loss I fell into a 9 team tie at .500. Week 3 is when you find out if early season surprises are ones to bank on, or if they are flukes. I heard a stat on Sportscenter this morning that last year 6 of 7 teams in the NFL that started out 2-0 made the playoffs. I wonder if that stat transfers to fantasy. I think I will look into that...

Here are the fantasy leaders for week 2. You may note some non familiar names on the list. We will see soon whether they will stay there for the season. One trend I am noticing is that fantasy owners should really pay attention to offensive lines when drafting runningbacks. A few examples...
Since Willie Roaf retired, Larry Johnson's numbers are not near what they were last year.
Cadillac Williams is running behind two back up lineman and has not run for 50 yards in a game.
Shaun Alexander lost his starting left guard from last year and is averaging 3.1 YPC.
Edgerrin James is working at 3.1 YPC behind the biggest and slowest offensive line in the league.

Week 2

I spent yesterday on the couch at a buddy's house. He decided to leave comcast and get the NFL ticket from Directv. He has all the games. We were able to switch from one to another and then we realized something. He has a $5,000 plasma Sony wega and we were not watching in HD. Directv fails to tell you when you sign up for the ticket that you need to pay an extra $100 to get the package in HD. We obviously had to make a change and step up. In addition, I read you can follow up to 9 players with Player Tracker. My buddy made a call and switched to the HD package in midstream. Ah the blindingly bright colors, the crisp clearness of Aaron Brooks fumbling back to back snaps and Eli Manning leading a late rally over the Eagles.

Unfortunately it looks like my fantasy team lost a tight one. I made a couple of management errors and a couple of good decisions. Mike Vick turned out to be the right play as he had a dynamite game and Steve McNair did not. I picked Michael Clayton over Mike Jenkins and that was the right play. But, taking the Rams D vs Alex Smith over the Broncos v Huard and LJ was a mistake. For the second straight week the Broncos did not allow a touchdown. Also, who would have known but Mike Anderson ripped off a 36 yard TD run at the end of the Ravens/Raiders game and had more points than Jamal Lewis. I am currently down 2 and have no players left. My opponant has Heath Miller tonight. It is safe to say I lost. To be fair, he left Cotchery, Troy Williamson and the Dallas D on his bench so if he played the right guys he would have won anyway. Biggest disappointments for my team were the meager efforts by Jeremy Shockey and Anquan Boldin. My 3rd and 4th draft picks combined for 8 points. Shockey only had 17 yards when Manning threw for over 300!

Back to the drawing board.

Thursday

Official injury report is released today. Jeremy Shockey and Jamal Lewis are on the report. Shockey is probable and Lewis is questionable. However, I expect both to play major roles this week. I will monitor to make sure nothing deteriorates, but I see no reason to change.

I feel better about not being able to pick up either Texans RB backups after Domanick Davis went on IR. The Texans traded for Samkon Gado last night. They obviously are not happy with the running back situation.

Fantasy Preview

Now that it is Wednesday morning most Fantasy Football sites put in their forecasts for this week's match ups. I am predicted to lose 95-89. Just like last week.
As I begin to analyze my team for this week there are some things to think about. First, at QB. Mike Vick is going up against a supposedly tough Tampa D. In the past, Tampa has been able to contain Vick by using a spy. His rushing has been limited and passing erratic. However, Steve McNair had no trouble finding open targets. Because of the presence of Ashley Lelie, Jenkins, and Roddy White it may be tough for Tampa to use a spy. Vick may have a good day. I also have Steve McNair. Steve has a good match up at home against the poor Oakland Raiders. As of now, I will stay with Vick and see how it goes. This may be a perfect match up to use McNair though.
Secondly, my defenses. Under new coordinator Jim Haslett the Rams had a great performance versus a good Denver offense and could emerge as a sleeper unit through the season. They are a decent option for Week 2 at San Francisco. The Denver D, held the explosive Rams offense without a touchdown and face a good Chiefs offense. However, Trent Green is out and Huard is the QB. I smell low scoring, running offense for the chiefs to avoid INTs. This one is a toss up but I am going with the Rams vs. the 49ers offense.
The last choice I really have is between Michael Clayton vs the Atlanta D or Michael Jenkins v the Tampa D. I am going with Clayton, hoping for a bounceback game from Chris Simms and I am splitting the difference. If Vick has a bad game then Jenkins will probably suffer. This would lead to a lot of Tampa offensive opportunities which could benefit Clayton. You may say I am hedging my bets a little.
Injury reports have just started to come out but it is too early to make decisions on those. Keep an eye on the reports though.

Kornheiser's regular season debut

As for the Monday Night Football on ESPN. The lead in was one of the cheesiest intros I have seen. Schwarzenegger's cameo was stupid. You could tell ESPN put as much work into the intro as they do to covering the game.

To go along with that I just can't see what Tony Kornheiser is adding to the telecast. Every time he tries to work with Theisman, Joe hangs him out to dry. Joe completely disagrees with every comment Tony makes and doesn't engage him in conversation. In PTI, Tony is one of the best debaters I have seen. Maybe Theisman just doesn't want to take him on. Maybe, Joe is trying to haze in the rookie? I don't know but Sunday night football was much better than this Monday night deal.

Working for Week 2

As I begin to prepare for week 2, I must analyze the football landscape. After watching the games last night, the most startling revelation is just how bad the Raiders are versus a mediocre Chargers squad. Randy Moss will not see the ball and Lamont Jordan did absolutely nothing. For teams who own them I would prepare to bench them this week as they face a Baltimore D that dominated a solid Tampa Bay offense. Tomlinson looked like himself and Chester Taylor looked strong running behind the huge Minnesota offensive line.

I had the 6th highest point total in my 14 team league. Very respectable.

A Day After

As I recover from the first Sunday of NFL Football, I begin to reflect on the day. Spending 5 hours in a bar with friends eating wings and drinking Miller Lite made Sunday a very enjoyable event. There were several surprises on Sunday. For my team, it looks like a solid win in week one. I am up 96 to 57 going into tonight's games. My opponent has Clinton Portis, but news flash, he shouldn't suit up tonight, but if he does it will only be in a reserve roll.

Mike Vick has a good game against a tough Carolina D. Jamal Lewis looked to be running like he had in the past. Explosive and strong against the number one Defense from a year ago. Laveraneus Coles had more receiving yards(153) than any other receiver. He may have been a steal in the draft. Shockey had a solid game as did Anquan Boldin. The biggest mistake I made was keeping Lawrence Maroney on my bench. As I stated before, I was worried about how many carries he would see. I thought Mike Anderson may split carries with Lewis. It turns out, Jamal Lewis handled the load and Maroney got as many carries as Corey Dillon. You can bet Maroney will be starting for me next week! If you would like, check out the Fantasy Leaders so far in week one

First Night of Football

The first night of the 2006 football season lived up to its billing. Charlie Batch had a 126.5 rating, threw 3 touchdown passes and led the Steelers to a 28-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Daunte Culpepper looked pretty solid in his debut coming off a nasty knee injury in 2005. Willie Parker rushed for over 115 yards on 29 carries and provided he could handle the load of the Pittsburgh running game. Lets see if he can handle it for a whole season. Heath Miller had a huge 87 yard TD catch and finished with over 100 yards receiving. (How does a tight end have an 87 yard reception?) A good start to the fantasy season for owners of Parker and Miller.

The best part of the whole game had to be when former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis(now a half-time commentator) arrived in Steel City in a bright yellow school bus. Pittsburgh faithful stood and gave him a huge ovation.

Game Day

The first day of the 2006 football season is upon us. Thank goodness, baseball is so boring! There has been some last minute news of note for me. Patriots rookie Lawrence Maroney is not listed on the injury report this week. That contradicts word that he was out with a knee injury. In any case I am not playing him this week until I see what his role is in the New England offense.

I am excited for the season to begin but not too excited about my team. I am hoping for a few surprises to surface.

Week One games tomorrow

Well this is tough. In our league you can place a player on IR and pick up another if he satisfies one of the following two conditions...
  1. He is listed as out on the NFL injury report
  2. He did not play a down in the previous week

Since this is week one and games are on Thursday, injury reports are not out yet. So, no one can be put on IR. This causes a small problem as Jamal Lewis is questionable for week one unofficially. I will still start him and assume he is ok.

Here is my week one match up...

M. Vick v T Green

J. Lewis v K Jones

M. Anderson v C Portis

A. Boldin v R. Wayne

L. Coles v A. Johnson

M. Clayton v D Jackson

J. Shockey v LJ Smith

D. Akers v J Casey

Broncos v Patriots

predicted score: Me to lose 86-79

Line Up

Two days before the first games.
Here is my current line up. I have my fingers crossed.
QB Michael Vick
RB Jamal Lewis
RB Mike Anderson
FLEX Michael Clayton
WR Anquan Boldin
WR Laveraneus Coles
TE Jeremy Shockey
K David Akers
D Denver Broncos

I guess the lucky thing for me is that week one the team I face has Clinton Portis. Who knows if he will play yet.

My team

It doesn't look to exciting on paper and I am not ecstatic about the team. I think I drafted better last year. Anyway, not much changed on the fantasy landscape for me until this past Saturday night. I found out Domanick Davis(my number one draft pick) had been placed in IR. His season is over. Oh my god! That news just crushed me. He was ranked high on most preseason lists and his injury did not appear to be initially serious. Oh Well! This usually happens once a preseason. A high end player gets injured and someon's fantasy dreams tumble.
I guess I should have taken Wali Lundy or Morency as insurance for Davis instead of Mike Anderson. I thought Jamal was more of an injury risk. Since both Lundy and Morency were already picked up I had to think fast. After dropping Davis, I found out Maroney(who had a fantastic preseason) is out for week one with a knee injury. Reports say nothing serious but that is what I thought about Davis. Anyway, what to do now. Since our league is so large there are not many RB options out there. My best shot is to pick a back up RB and hope he gets some goal line or 3rd down carries. The best available options appear to be Verron Haynes, Michel Turner, Maurice Hicks, and LaBrandon Toefield. These back ups all appear to be poor choices but I have to pick someone.
Any thoughts? I chose Verron Haynes. I am figuring Parker will be spelled quite a bit as Big Bill doesn't want his stud to get too tired. Also with Big Ben out for 1-2 weeks that means Pitt. will rely on their running game even more than usual. Sounds good in theory at least.
As of now, however I am starting Jamal Lewis and Mike Anderson as of now with my three wide outs. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Analysis

I went into this draft with a plan as I do most drafts.
First, I didn't want to draft a quarterback until late in the draft. There are so many good fantasy quarterbacks and the difference from one to the next is generally small compared to the difference between top running backs, tight ends, and wide receivers.
Second, I would go for the best available player that is relatively young.
Third, receivers and tight ends have become more important as teams pass more.
Fourth, I was looking for players, coming off sub par years that could have huge upside.

I Figured the first three picks would be Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown, and Julius Jones. I was right. The problem came in that I had grouped Domanick Davis, Brian Westbrook, and Willie Parker all in the same class. Followed by Kevin Jones, Jamal Lewis, and some others. I really like Kevin Jones this year in Mike Martz's new Lions offense. I thought Westbook and Fast Willie Parker may be too small to be a top line back for the whole year. That left Domanick Davis. Coming off a season that limited him to 13 games but being very productive in most of them I thought he could have a break out season. So with my first pick I chose Domanick Davis.

I followed up with Jamal Lewis. I wanted to have a back that would get carries near the goal line. Last year with Julius Jones and Warrick Dunn, they had small touchdown numbers because of bigger backs getting goal line carries. Willie Parker last year with Bettis is a prime example. So by taking Lewis I was betting on a recovery to his old self. In addition, the Ravens brought in a competant passer in McNair and a backup in Mike Anderson who will push Jamal.
I then had to sit and wait as the rest of the runningbacks and top wide receivers went off the board.

My 3rd pick came around and Anquan Boldin was sitting there. Top flight WR and I took himno questions asked.

I followed that up with Jeremy Shockey. Antonio Gates was gone but I thought having Rivers through to him instead of Brees would affect his numbers. Shockey is on an up and coming team in a competitive division. Eli Manning has a lot of weapons around him but if Shockey stays healthy he could have a monster year over the middle. Plus, he gets a lot of red zone looks. Quarterbacks started to go now.

With my next pick I looked for upside and chose Laurence Maroney, the 1st year back from Minnesota who is slated to back up and eventually take over for Corey Dillon. I think he could be a real sleeper who is dominant half way through the year if Dillon breaks down.

I filled out my starting WR with Laveranues Coles. He has great chemistry with both Chad Pennington and Patrick Ramsey and as long as the QB stays upright he will put up good numbers. The Jets may be pretty bad and be out of games early. If that happens, look for them to throw often and hopefully to Mr. Coles.

Then with most QBs gone I took Mike Vick. It was a gamble but not so late in the draft(7th round). Maybe he can put it all together this year.

I then looked at a defense. In the past I have not cared about the Defense and just picked them with my last two picks. Last year the Bears D won me many a game because they put up huge numbers. Same with the Patriots the year before. That made me change my tune. I picked the Denver D in Mile High as most of the top defenses were off the board.

I filled out the squad with Michael Jenkins(3rd year wide out) Michael Clayton(3rd year wide out) and Mike Anderson(Jamal's back up). I then got Steve McNair to back up Vick. I then filled out the line up with David Akers, Jason Hanson, a flier on Marcedes Lewis(highly touted tight end for Jax) and the St. Louis D. Wheew!
Our draft started at 9:45 pm and ended shortly after 1am. It was grueling, with computer freeze ups, people taking awhile to pick and autopilot picking 7 quarterbacks for some people. We as a league, came to the decision to do whatever possible to not be an online draft ever again.

Learn about Social Bookmarks

Draft process

Now, because we have been around four years and this the fifth I have to give you my credentials.
Year 1) 7-7 missed playoffs
Year 2) 9-5 lost in 1st round of playoffs
Year 3) 11-5 lost in Championship
Year 4) 10-3 3rd place
I have been told I have the highest win total of any franchise to date.( I have not checked on that) but, I have never had a losing season.

Our league allows a maximum of two keepers each year and you can keep them as many years as you like. I did not keep anyone off my team last year. I let Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Julius Jones, Warrick Dunn go. I decided to start with a clean slate. Other teams kept players and those kept who were off the draft board are:
Shaun Alexander, LaDanian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, Torry Holt, Steven Jackson, Clinton Portis, Lamont Jordan, Tiki Barber, Peyton Manning.

So, all these players are off the draft board. Because of last year's records and the fact that four other teams did not keep any players, I had the 4th and 5th picks(the league has a snake draft). Which really is like the 15th and 16th picks.

Leading up to the draft

Now I must say some of us put more work into drafting our players than others. Some team GM's visit sites such as www.espn.com, www.yahoo.com, www.cbs.sportsline.com, www.fftoday.com among others to gather their information, some read the magazines published in early August, some just use god given drafting ability, and some let their wives draft their teams. I myself buy one magazine in early August to begin my analysis. I then avoid the big sites like espn and yahoo that most people read. It is tough to get any opinions other than consensus at those sites. Generally, I focus on fftoday and the magazine of choice.

I am part of a 14 team league now that has its league on www.cbs.sportsline.com
This is our fifth year in this online league. While I am not the commissioner of the league, I have been a part since the beginning. We started with 12 teams and had an expansion draft two years ago to get to our current 14 teams. Generally, we are friends who met at some time over the last 10 years. Football is something we all love and fantasy is our addiction. The last four years we have had the draft in person at someone's house. This seems to be the best wasy to do a draft. Everyone gets together one night and spends 2-4 hours depending on the size of your league drafting players. We all look forward to draft day and seeing people we don't get to see during the course of the year. We have a few beers, eat some food and ridicule each other for the inept picks we make. Over time some of us moved away making it much harder to get together. So this year we set an online draft on a weeknight in mid August.
